This was a request for :iconfencerscokefoafa: who came up with the idea for a showdown featuring two of sci-fi's best loved strong female characters of the moment. Firefly's River Tam and Star Wars' Mara Jade.

Thanks also to him for the lightsaber tute with which I adapted to fit a blade in motion - I got there in the end ;)

I know it's a bit late, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOTT! :D

INSANE. This is AMAZING!!! Thanks so much for doing this!

Great job with the lighting effects. Mara and River's hair looks awesome, you always do an impressive job with that. It also looks like my lightsaber tut helped you out with Mara's blade, you got it to fan out, that's good. :)

I imagine next time I see you online we can talk more about the work, and I'll have more things to say. :D But thanks SO much again for doing this. This is the best belated birthday present I've ever gotten. ;)

Yeeeah, this is going to my fav list immediately.

How to get pageviews without adcast or any hassle.
Yay! glad you liked it, I was doing my best to get it finished before xmas without rushing hehe. I used a variation of your lightsaber rendering tute, Instead of erasing I painted - if that makes any sense to you? lol. No problem at all, i'm just pleased that you liked how it turned out - I always fret about things like that ;)

She's got an axe! Run! Purple is a Mara Jade color, unlike pink (which some people believe her cape to be....)

Hm, Mara's arm is holding the saber at an odd angle (in relation to the way her legs are posed). It would look better with the face pointing upwards and the sword forearm shortened (it looks long and floppy as is). The composition could be improved if Mara's hair curves back at River at the tips, because it looks a little stiff (uneven lighting sources). That and I'm biased against lens flair XP

lol it certainly goes with that new film to be released sometime next year "Don't touch the axe!" XD
Hmm I actually preffer the angle of the arm like that, to have it outwards would leave it open for an attack was all I was thinking :p Jedi aren't all that invincible.
Why would her hair curve back if she were traveling forwards? There is more than one light source too. The lens flare is more for embelishment than anything else, it seemed to help with the composition than act against it.

Sweet Peace! I'm rooting for Mara!

"Smile, it makes people think you're up to something."

"The truth is always greater then the word we choose to describe it."
It's just that at this angle, it looks like her arm is too high on her body because her clothing makes it look like the arm is pinned on and too far backwards instead of attached to the middle of the torso (by middle, I mean the area between the chest and the back viewed from profile, not how high the socket is). Her upper torso seems to droop because her shoulders aren't wide enough. The forearm's length makes the pose awkward because its supposed to be the same length as the upper arm.

I can't really explain without a picture :/

I'm not too sure about the hair, it's just that I thought it would give it depth if it showed how it bent back, because the shading on the hair actually makes it look flatter, like it's being layed out on a flat surface, instead of some of the hair being underneath. If the parts with the largest "shine" (seperated by the 'line' formed by the strands facing the other direction) had none, it would look more like it was the "under" hair and improve the feeling of depth. Somewhat like this: [link]
